Feeling Special

What does it take to make you feel special? Is it a complement on the way you look or from something you do? Maybe you have a skill that you’re especially good doing. I’m sure that if you took the time and thought about it, you’d come away with a few ideas on what makes you feel special.

How does it make you feel when you get a “good deal?” “Just for you, we’ll give you an extra 15% off the price” “JUST FOR ME?!” Or how about when it’s your birthday? I know that some restaurants will give you a free dessert or special half-price on your meal on your birthday. It makes you feel special. Plus they want you to bring your friends to join you.

How about some new clothes, shoes, a haircut (style or color)? Guys have these “boys toys.” If I get a new guitar or another piece of equipment, I feel special, usually because I’ve denied myself for awhile and put a little cash away here and there until I have the funds to get that special something, because “I’m special, I deserve it.”

Sometimes we feel special just because of the church we attend. We feel that our form of worship or beliefs at our church is better than those down the street or on the other side of town. And when we start feeling special, we have a tendency to look down our nose at others who don’t have what it is that makes us feel special. You see this kind of thinking is all just a state of mind.

Then along comes this guy named Jesus. He let his followers know that they should not consider themselves too highly. Jesus chose them, they didn’t choose Jesus. And Paul is also someone who reminds us that God chose us not the other way around “that no one would boast.” Or plainly, don’t think of yourself so special. Because God “chose the whole world…” So in that case, we are special, enough that God had a plan to win our hearts through Jesus going to the cross for us.

So when you wake in the morning, don’t get trapped by the other things that “make you feel special.” Dwell on the fact that God; the creator of the universe thinks so highly of us, that He wants a loving relationship with us from now through eternity. Now that is something you can feel special about each and every day.
